Climate action

Addressing climate change is a key priority for us. We have set targets validated by SBTi and continue to build on our near-term targets for 2034/2035 and accelerating our efforts on our journey towards our long-term targets for 2050.

Reducing our impact on the planet

The climate crisis is one of the defining challenges of our time. Its impact is global, affecting people, communities, and the way we do business. As a manufacturer and trader of many single-use products, we recognize both our responsibility and our opportunity to reduce our environmental impact.

We are working to measure and reduce upstream and downstream greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The key lever to achieve that is the application of circular design principles.

 Towards net-zero

The ABENA Group has committed to achieve net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain by FY2050, aligned with our mission to provide quality of life. We are transforming our assortment and business accordingly with near-term and net-zero targets validated by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi).

What is scope 1, 2 and 3?

Scope 1

Scope 1 refers to direct emissions from ABENA’s own operations. These are emissions from sources we fully control ourselves, such as our own production facilities, and fuel in our company vehicles.

Scope 2

Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the energy we consume. They are “indirect” because the emissions occur at the facilities of our energy suppliers. These emissions include electricity used for heating, cooling, and operations.

Scope 3

Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that ABENA is responsible for throughout the value chain. These are emissions from e.g. the production and transportation of our sourced products, as well as emissions generated from use of our products.

Areas we focus on to achieve our targets

We translate our climate commitments into specific actions across scopes 1, 2, and 3. This includes production, sourcing, logistics, product design, and circular initiatives throughout our value chain.

Emissions accounting

We establish a detailed emissions inventory for Scope 1, 2, and 3 to identify where reductions matter most and ensure we track progress to science-based benchmarks.

Decarbonizing operations

We invest in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and production technologies that lower emissions at our facilities.

Supplier engagement

We work with our suppliers to improve data quality, traceability, material choices, and reducing emissions in products and production.

Logistics optimization

We reduce logistics emissions by optimizing transport, increasing efficiency, and collaborating with partners.

Circular solutions

We integrate circular design principles into products and processes to minimize waste and promote more sustainable materials, supporting customers in their own sustainability goals.

Key activities in scope 3

Most emissions occur upstream, so Scope 3 is our biggest lever - and key to supporting customer reporting. We prioritize the biggest emitters, improve data with primary supplier data, and focus on materials, logistics, and use-phase energy.

Decarbonizing

We prioritize robust Scope 3 accounting, energy efficiency, responsible electricity procurement, logistics optimization, and supplier engagement to reduce upstream impacts.

Committing to Paris Agreement goals

We have committed to the SBTi, with approved GHG reduction targets. These targets align with climate science and the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to well below 2°C and pursue 1.5°C.

SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global CompactWorld Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Approaching Circularity: Reusing Single-use Textiles at Hospitals

ABENA is tackling the challenge of residual waste in healthcare through an innovative pilot project in Denmark. By exploring the reuse of disposable textiles from hospitals, we aim to increase circularity and transform waste into new raw materials, while maintaining the high hygiene standards required in the sector.

Optimized Palletizing Improve Costs and Climate Impact

In Aabenraa, Denmark, ABENA’s production facility has just finished a successful pallet optimization project. Now, economic and environmental benefits are gained by optimizing product packaging. In fact, last year, the same amount of products were shipped in 80 fewer containers for one of ABENA’s customers. That saved the customer 4% in the landed cost price.
