Frequently Asked Questions - Wound Care
In long-term care settings, pressure ulcers are very common. They form when prolonged pressure or friction reduces blood flow to the skin, typically affecting people with limited mobility. These wounds can range from mild redness to deep tissue damage. Chronic ulcers, including venous, arterial, and diabetic ulcers, also occur frequently. These wounds result from circulation problems and heal slowly. Venous ulcers often appear on the lower legs, arterial ulcers on the feet or toes, and diabetic foot ulcers on pressure points where sensation is reduced. Skin tears and trauma are also typical. Many elderly residents have thin, delicate skin that can tear easily during care tasks or minor accidents. Surgical wounds are another frequent wound type. While some incisions heal well, others may show signs of infection or slow healing, especially in older adults with chronic conditions.
Wound healing happens in four phases. First, the body stops the bleeding. Then, it sends immune cells to clean the wound and reduce infection risk. Next, new skin and blood vessels begin to form. Finally, the wound strengthens and closes over time—a process that may take weeks or even months. If a wound doesn’t heal properly, you may notice persistent swelling, unusual discharge, a foul smell, or tissue that darkens in color.
The best dressing depends on the wound’s depth, moisture level, and location. Surface wounds may need only light protection, while deeper wounds or those with more drainage need absorbent dressings that maintain a moist healing environment. Elderly skin is often fragile, so gentle adhesives or silicone-based dressings are preferred to avoid damage during changes. Wounds on areas that bend or move should be covered with flexible, secure dressings. If there’s a high risk of infection, antimicrobial dressings may be needed. A good dressing should protect the wound, support healing, and be comfortable for the resident.
ABENA’s wound care assortment offers everything from fixation tapes to Post-Op dressings. Our wound care range is designed for everyday clinical use across hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and home care. ABENA has offered wound care products for the healthcare industry since 2004 and emphasizes a broad range, easy and hygienic packaging, and good quality wound care products at fair prices.
In practice, product selection depends on the wound type, exudate level, skin condition, and whether sterile handling is required. ABENA’s range is built to support: Routine cleansing of wounds (swabs and tampons) Exudate management (absorbent pads) Post-surgical protection (sterile post-op dressings) Reliable dressing retention (fixation and bandages) Edema/circulation support (compression).
