SBTi approves ABENA's Climate Targets

ABENA has received official approval of its climate targets from the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This marks an important milestone in our ongoing commitment to responsible business and measurable climate action.

The approval confirms that our targets are aligned with the latest climate science. They also support international ambitions to limit global warming to well below 2°C and to pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Jens-Peter Poulsen, CEO of the ABENA Group, says, “Having our climate targets approved is an important recognition of the direction we have chosen. It confirms that we are taking responsibility for our impact and turning our ambition into concrete, science-based action that supports a more sustainable future.”

Net-zero, near-term, and long-term targets

Our approved climate targets cover both the near term and the long term, reflecting our commitment to acting today while working toward lasting change.

Near-term targets (2024-2034): The ABENA Group commits to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 58.8% and reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 35.0%.

Long-term and net-zero targets (2024-2050): The ABENA Group commits to reducing absolute scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 90%.

Andrea Krag Schmidt, Head of Global Sustainability and Compliance at the ABENA Group, says, “These targets give us a clear framework for action across our entire value chain. They help us prioritize where we can make the greatest difference and ensure that our efforts are measurable, credible, and aligned with science.”

Turning responsibility into action

With the approved targets, we commit to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions in line with science-based pathways. This means focusing on the areas where we can make the greatest difference – from energy use and materials to logistics and close collaboration with suppliers and partners.

“For us, climate targets are not a checkbox,” says Andrea Krag Schmidt. “They are a practical tool that guides how we develop products, work with suppliers, and run our operations across the value chain.”

Part of a long-term commitment

ABENA’s climate targets are part of our broader sustainability strategy, where taking care of people, products, and the planet goes hand in hand.

“The SBTi validation shows that our climate ambitions are measurable and accountable,” says Jens-Peter Poulsen. “It gives our customers and partners confidence that when we talk about reductions, they are real reductions within defined timeframes.”
