Helle ensures ABENA’s IT projects run smoothly, bringing structure and empathy from her background as a nurse

“At ABENA, they trusted that I could succeed - even though I came from a completely different field”

Helle started her career as a nurse and spent over a decade in the healthcare sector before making a major change. Today, she works in ABENA’s IT department as a project manager – a role that may seem far from hospitals and clinics, but where her experience helps to make a difference every day.

What is your role at ABENA?

I work as a project manager in our IT department. My job is all about balancing time, resources, and deliverables. I’m responsible for planning and coordinating IT projects that support the business and implementing new applications, for example SAP. It’s exciting because no two days are alike, and I help make sure our IT solutions actually support people’s daily work – whether it’s simplifying processes, improving data flow, or making systems easier to use across departments

You started your career in nursing. What made you switch into the world of IT?

After 13 years in healthcare - first as a nurse, then teaching, and later working with quality and development - I felt ready for something new. I wanted to move into a role where I could help drive change more directly and see the results of my work faster.

I had always known ABENA from the outside - I used ABENA products on a daily basis while working in hospitals and clinics. When I came across an open project manager role in IT, it caught my attention. I didn’t have a technical background or any experience with IT systems, but the way the role was described matched how I like to work – with structure, collaboration, and a clear sense of progress.

What helped you succeed in a completely new field like IT?

It was a steep learning curve – everything felt unfamiliar at first. But I had supportive colleagues around me and a clear understanding from the start that I wasn’t expected to be a technical expert. That gave me the space to focus on what I do best and build confidence along the way.

I’m still learning something new every day.

ABENA also supported me with a project management education, which we had already talked about during my job interview. Thanks to the flexibility ABENA offered I could make it work alongside my job.

What makes ABENA a special place to work at?

First of all, the work-life balance. Coming from healthcare, I thought private companies would mean long hours and constant pressure, but I was surprised – at ABENA, there’s a real focus on flexibility and finding solutions when life happens.

Second, the opportunity to keep learning. I want to keep developing – professionally and personally – and here, that’s possible. There’s always something new to work on, and room to grow. That’s important to me. And of course, being part of projects that succeed – that’s what keeps me motivated.
