Many ambulant clinics face challenges in the management of patient wear when it comes to cost prices, washing, disposing and overall logistics, and factors like hygiene, environmental concerns and patient comfort also play a huge part in this context. Consequently, more and more clinics are looking into alternative solutions such as disposable patient wear.
Together with the ambulant clinic at Kolding Hospital, we therefore set out to explore how well disposable wear perform compared to traditional hospital cotton fabric clothes.
For a year now, the clinic in Kolding has been using Abena’s disposable wear like scrub suits, gowns, pants, underpants, pillow cases and bed sheets, and the overall feedback is very positive.
“Our patients are positively surprised when they receive this patient kit. Patients can see that the clothes are clean, and we can simultaneously offer our patients to wear the clothes back home, for example when they have undergone a knee procedure. In addition, the disposable clothes offer flexibility because they open an opportunity to cut in the clothes where the operation is performed and tape the cut afterwards to better uphold the modesty of the patient. We were a bit concerned whether the patients would stay warm in the disposable clothes as they are fasting, but there has been no issues in that connection”, says charge nurse at the ambulant clinic at Kolding Hospital.
The clinic made a survey by asking patients how they evaluate the disposable clothes, and approximately every other of the surveyed 105 patients preferred disposable clothes. While 42 patients were pleased with both solutions, only 13 patients preferred the traditional cotton clothes.
Piles of laundry have almost disappeared from the clinic at Kolding Hospital and it is an improvement for all parties.
Besides being an improvement for the patients and the staff, use of disposable wear may also be visible on the bottom line: “expenses for washing and management of traditional cotton clothes are substantial, but our studies indicate that by replacing cotton clothes with disposable wear, clinics might be able to reduce costs with up to 45%,” says Global Category Manager at Abena, Ane Kirstine Schmidt.
